M.A in Spiritual Companionship

The Faculty of Theology at the University of Malta, in collaboration with Carmelite Institute Malta, is offering again the Master of Arts in Spiritual Companionship a professional programme aiming to train and empower candidates in discovering and practising the art and profession of spiritual companionship. The course aims at responding to the need for the ongoing formation of pastoral ministers and school religious counsellors.  

The different study-units of the programme cover the following topics: Introduction to spirituality; Dynamics of growth and maturity in the spiritual life; Foundations of spiritual companionship; Foundational theories of psychology; Principles of spiritual discernment; Emerging contexts in spiritual companionship; Practicum in spiritual companionship; Psychospiritual growth; Counselling in a pastoral setting; Helping skills in spiritual companionship; Supervision in spiritual companionship; Ethical issues in spiritual companionship.

 The third year is wholly dedicated to the writing of the dissertation.

The course is recommended for those who wish to be involved in the spiritual formation of others by providing the service of spiritual companionship and direction. It is also recommended to those engaged in pastoral ministry, particularly family and youth ministers, chaplains, spiritual directors in schools, and group leaders.

M.A in Spirituality

The Faculty of Theology at the University of Malta, in collaboration with Carmelite Institute Malta, is offering again the Master of Arts in Spirituality, a professional programme intended to offer a solid grounding in Christian spirituality, as well as a deeper appreciation, in the General Stream, of other secular streams of spirituality. It also equips students with the skills needed to become animators of others and discern the signs of the times. Student can choose between General or Carmelite Spirituality as their streams of specialisation in the Second Year of the programme. 

The different study-units of the programme cover the following topics: 

  • First Year: 

Introduction to spirituality; Systematics of spirituality; Dynamics of growth and maturity in the spiritual life; Biblical spirituality; Christian spirituality through the ages.

  • Second Year: Stream A (General Spirituality): 

Major schools of Christian spirituality; Spirituality of the Christian states of life; Spirituality and life stages; Gender spiritualities; World spiritualities; Spirituality and social commitment. 

  • Second Year, Stream B (Carmelite Spirituality): 

Foundations and development of Carmelite Spirituality; Saint John of the Cross; St Teresa of Jesus; The French Carmelite School; Major themes in Carmelite Spirituality.   

 The third year is wholly dedicated to the writing of the dissertation.
  
The course is recommended for those interested in spirituality or intending to pursue ongoing personal formation. It is also recommended for those involved in formation within different religious orders and Christian communities, as well as persons committed to evangelisation, ministry and catechesis.

M.A in Environmental Ethics

The Master of Arts in Environmental Ethics is an inter-faculty programme that aims to identify and analyse the ethical and political underpinnings of cultural, biological and ecological degradation, as well as of the potential for creating and safeguarding sustainable human ecologies for the benefit of both present and future generations.

Offered by the Faculty of Theology, in collaboration with the Faculty for the Built Environment, the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Health Sciences, the Faculty of Laws, the Institute of Earth Systems and the Centre for Environmental Education and Research, the course is strongly inter-disciplinary in its scientific analysis and ethical evaluation.

The modules of the programme cover the following topics:

  • Environmental ethics, the political community and future generations
  • The relational human subject and cultural-ecological responsibility
  • Environmental ethics in law and policy making
  • Environmental ethics and economics
  • The built environment: aesthetics and sustainability
  • Technological sustainability
  • Food ethics
  • Education for sustainable development

M.A in Catholic School Leadership

The Master of Arts in Catholic School Leadership is a joint inter-disciplinary programme that is intended to train and empower candidates involved in the leadership of schools and other faith entities. It aims at fostering research and good practices in managerial and leadership skills, as well as reflective practice in Catholic leadership. 

The different modules of the programme cover the following topics: educational management and leadership; fundamentals of educational research; critical issues for school leaders; effective leadership in schools; applied educational research methods; professional development models; Catholic understanding of humanity for contemporary culture; leadership in the Church; psychology of leadership; nurturing professional learning communities in Maltese schools; contemporary Catholic institutions; and developing emotional and relational competence. 

The course is recommended for those interested or already involved in the running of Catholic schools and/or faith formation institutions, and those interested in enriching their profession with the philosophical vision of Catholic leadership.

M.A in Business Ethics

The Master of Arts in Business Ethics is an inter-disciplinary programme that introduces candidates to the important ethical issues, concepts and theories linked to the context of business activities and related economic environments. Offered by the Faculty of Theology in collaboration with the Faculty of Laws and the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy (FEMA), the course brings together the fields of business studies, philosophical ethics, marketing, public policy, law, and moral theology.

M.A in Bioethics

The Master of Arts in Bioethics is an inter-disciplinary programme that encourages research in bioethics and enables a systematic and critical understanding of the theoretical foundations and methodology of this area. The course aims to foster a culture respectful of bioethics amongst biomedical and healthcare professionals, and train professionals to face the contemporary bioethical challenges.

The different modules of the programme cover the following topics: ethical issues in genetics; ethics at the edges of human life; the best interests of the child; neuroethics, mental health and psychiatric ethics; bioethics, law and policy; priority setting, justice and resource allocation; suffering, spirituality and palliative care; emerging European values and policies in bioethics; and research ethics.

Diploma in the Archival and Cultural Appreciation of Ecclesiastical Patrimony

The Diploma in the Archival and Cultural Appreciation of Ecclesiastical Patrimony is an undergraduate course (MQF Level 5) intended to provide students with the elements necessary to interpret the Church’s cultural heritage within the broader context of significant events and movements in the broader history of the European continent. The course is recommended for candidates at any level, who are interested in the Ecclesiastical Cultural heritage.

Certificate in Safeguarding of Children and Young People

This programme is offered as an interfaculty programme of the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty for Social Wellbeing.

The Certificate in Safeguarding of Children and Young People was created in view of the reality of the abuse of minors. This problem is to be investigated and tackled on different levels of society.

The aim of this one-year course is to introduce participants to the standards and main areas of concern regarding safeguarding of children and young people. It will equip you with the basic knowledge and skills to promote the welfare of children and young people, recognise and respond effectively the signs and indicators of abuse, and understand the depth of traumas caused by abuse. The course will also present you with the key principles of self-care and the fundamental ethical and legal obligations for when working with children and young people.

M.A. in Religious Studies

The course provides you a greater understanding of the impact of religion and spirituality in the contemporary world. It could be followed part-time twice a week. This permits you to study in a flexible manner, while keeping other commitments.

This course enables you to become highly aware and expertly articulate about the diversity of global religious and spiritual life. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the programme seeks to probe relationships between religion, spirituality, society, identity, ethics and popular culture. Through a re-discovering of texts and traditions, you will explore central concepts and teachings as well as analyse the phenomenon of religion from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives.

The areas of studies are divided mainly into: Holy Scriptures, Ministry, Comparative Theology (Ecumenism, Inter-religious Dialogue and Dialogue with society), Historical Theology, Systematic Theology and Ethics. You will gain advanced research skills and will network with scholars dedicated to the study of religions or religious thought.
