Expression of Interest for Safeguarding Training

Through its updated Safeguarding Policy (see here: https://safeguarding.mt/church-safeguarding-policy/), the Safeguarding Commission has established new operating standards to support the Archdiocese of Malta in its ongoing commitment to providing high‑quality pastoral work.

One of these standards is the requirement for regular, high‑quality safeguarding formation, informed by best practice and delivered by the Safeguarding Commission. As a result, all individuals within Church communities who have direct responsibility for children and vulnerable adults are required to undergo safeguarding training.

“All Church personnel receive adequate safeguarding training during their induction, and every three years following such induction to integrate safeguarding principles in their day-to-day practice, and to share research and best practices in this field.” – Safeguarding Policy adopted by the Church in Malta and Gozo (November 2024)

Not everyone in the community is required to complete this training. It applies specifically to those with direct responsibilities towards the target groups mentioned above, such as catechists, youth leaders, priests, and pastoral workers, in line with the Safeguarding Policy’s definition of Church personnel.

“Any member or members of the clergy (bishops, priests, deacons), of consecrated life or of an equivalent status, of societies of apostolic life, of the faithful who enjoy a dignity or perform an office or function within the Church, including lay people duly appointed or commissioned to work in the areas of administration, pastoral ministry and care, employees and volunteers engaged in all the various activities within Church entities, staff members engaged with a Church entity through another entity, or seminarians and religious students in formation.” – Safeguarding Policy adopted by the Church in Malta and Gozo (November 2024)

🧩 Course Structure

The course is divided into two parts:

Part 1: In‑Person Session

Part 2: Online Learning

Following the in‑person session, participants are required to complete two hours of pre‑recorded sessions available through our Moodle platform.

✅ Completion of both parts is mandatory in accordance with the updated Safeguarding Policy of the Archdiocese of Malta.
