This seminar on Extraordinary Ministry of the Eucharist will be split into two sessions on two different dates: 

Session 1: The Eucharist in Scripture and Theology

This session delves in into the Biblical and doctrinal roots of Catholic Eucharistic belief and practice. It includes an Introduction to the Eucharist, providing an overview of the Eucharist as a central sacrament in the Catholic Church. Emphasis will be made on its significance and the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Participants will also explore scriptural basis for the Eucharist, focusing on its foreshadowing in the Hebrew Scriptures, and its presentation in Christian biblical passages such as the Last Supper narratives in the Synoptic Gospels, the Bread of Life discourse in the Gospel of John, and the Pauline Letters. The final part of this session will examine the theological understanding of the Eucharist, including topics such as transubstantiation, sacrifice, and the communal nature of the Eucharist. The teachings of the Church Fathers, Saints, and the Magisterium up until the present day will be presented.

Session 2: Practical and Pastoral Aspects of the Eucharist and Holy Communion

This session will involve participants through various questions they might have on the topic. It includes an overview of the liturgical norms and rubrics related to the celebration of the Mass (including a basic explanation of the altar and the Eucharistic vessels) and the distribution of Holy Communion. An explanation of proper procedures and gestures to be observed by extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion will be explained. Emphasis will be made on the importance of liaising with priests and other responsible members of the parish or school community, reverence and respect when handling the Eucharist, and also the appropriate demeanour and attitude that should be maintained during the distribution of Holy Communion. A discussion on the pastoral role of extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, including their responsibility to provide supportive visits to the homebound, guide patients regarding the availability of priests for the sacrament of Penance, and the distribution of Holy Communion to the faithful who request it. The session will conclude with an emphasises on the need for ongoing formation and education for extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion.
