Pastoral Formation Institute Board
Rev. Dr André Zaffarese - Chairperson of the Board
Fr André Zaffarese was appointed Chairperson of the Board and Director of the PFI in June 2021. He has held various roles within the Institute since 2013 and has been a board member since 2018. He has a doctorate in Pastoral Theology and specialises in Parish life and ministry. Apart from being the Director of the Institute, Fr André is also the Archbishop's Delegate for Parish Life and Activity and Rector of the pastoral zone of Ta' Mlit in Mosta. Ch
Mr Frank Mifsud - Secretary to the Board
Mr Frank Mifsud is the Secretary to the Board. He became a member of the board in 2022. Mr Mifsud holds a B.A. in Social Work and a Diploma in Spiritual Accompaniment. In the Public Service, Mr. Mifsud was mainly involved in implementing reforms in the social welfare sector. He also chaired the Foundation for Social Welfare Services. In 2006 he was appointed as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry for Health. Mr Mifsud is currently a Board member of the St Jeanne Antide Foundation and a collaborator at the Centre for Ignatian Spirituality.
Rev. Prof. Mark Sultana
Fr Mark Sultana has been on the Board since its foundation in 2005. He served as director of the Institute from 2008 until 2017. He holds a doctorate in Philosophy and is a professor at the Faculty of Theology within the University of Malta. He currently also serves as spiritual director at the Archdiocese's major seminary.
Prof. Nadia Delicata
Prof Nadia Delicata is the Episcopal Delegate for Evangelisation within the Archdiocese of Malta. She has been a member of the board since 2013. She holds a doctorate in Moral Theology and lectures at the Faculty of Theology within the University of Malta. She is married and has three children.
Prof. Jean-Paul De Lucca
Prof Jean-Paul De Lucca has been a member of the board and lecturer within the Institute since 2022. He holds a doctorate in Philosophy and is a professor at the Faculty of Philosophy within the University of Malta. Prof De Lucca is a member of the editorial board of Bruniana & Campanelliana, and a collaborator with the Archivio del Rinascimento, a project of the Istituto per il Lessico Intellettuale Europeo e Storia delle Idee (ILIESI).
Ms Mariella Catania
Ms Mariella Catania is involved in various aspects of pastoral life within the Archdiocese of Malta. She has been a member of the board and lecturer within the Institute since 2009. Mariella is an active member within her christian community. She holds a Master of Arts in Theology and is married and has a son.
Dr Rebecca Gatt
Dr Rebecca Gatt has been appointed as a member of the board since June 2024. She holds a Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Leicester and currently occupies the position of Human Resources Director with the Archdiocese of Malta. She is responsible for developing and implementing human resources policies and strategies that enable the Archbishop’s Curia and other entities of the Church in Malta to recruit, train, and retain a high performing, motivated and diverse workforce. She is married and has two daughters.
