The Faculty of Theology at the University of Malta, in collaboration with Carmelite Institute Malta, is offering again the Master of Arts in Spirituality, a professional programme intended to offer a solid grounding in Christian spirituality, as well as a deeper appreciation, in the General Stream, of other secular streams of spirituality. It also equips students with the skills needed to become animators of others and discern the signs of the times. Student can choose between General or Carmelite Spirituality as their streams of specialisation in the Second Year of the programme.
The different study-units of the programme cover the following topics:
- First Year:
Introduction to spirituality; Systematics of spirituality; Dynamics of growth and maturity in the spiritual life; Biblical spirituality; Christian spirituality through the ages.
- Second Year: Stream A (General Spirituality):
Major schools of Christian spirituality; Spirituality of the Christian states of life; Spirituality and life stages; Gender spiritualities; World spiritualities; Spirituality and social commitment.
- Second Year, Stream B (Carmelite Spirituality):
Foundations and development of Carmelite Spirituality; Saint John of the Cross; St Teresa of Jesus; The French Carmelite School; Major themes in Carmelite Spirituality.
The third year is wholly dedicated to the writing of the dissertation.
The course is recommended for those interested in spirituality or intending to pursue ongoing personal formation. It is also recommended for those involved in formation within different religious orders and Christian communities, as well as persons committed to evangelisation, ministry and catechesis.
Course duration: 6 semesters part-time (evening)
Study mode: taught (2 years) and research (1 year)
